East Prairie Metis SettlementFounded in 1939, East Prairie Metis Settlement is located in northern Alberta within Big Lakes County, approximately 168 km east of Grande Prairie and 40 km south of High Prairie. The settlement’s population is under 1000 people, with a land area of 33,444 hectares. Traditional harvesting activities including hunting are still a big part of life in East Prairie Metis Settlement. East Prairie Metis Settlement’s diverse economy is made up of industries including forestry, oil and gas, transportation and construction. The settlement has a fully developed transportation network and infrastructure including a water treatment plant; lift station and lagoon, fire hall, health centre, day care facility, a school and outdoor arena, as well as a natural gas and electrical supply. East Prairie Metis Settlement is also home to the Wildland Firefighters, which is a team of professionally trained Metis firefighters. |
